What Code is Class 2?

In NZ, they have classes of driver licensing with respective rules. Class 2 specifically covers:

  • Heavy rigid vehicles
  • Trucks one trailer (within weight limits)
  • Certain large vans or delivery types of vehicles for commercial purposes

You will still have to obey all the road rules specified in the NZ Road Code, only with added responsibility as a heavy vehicle driver.

The Class 2 learner test has a theory component that you need to pass before learning to drive. The Class 2 theory test sets 35 questions from the Official New Zealand Road Code.

To be able to pass, you must answer at least:

  • 33 questions correctly

These are sample questions that accurately reflect the official test you will take, and questions that are very similar to the ones you will be asked. The test is conducted on a computer at an NZTA agent site (e.g. VTNZ or AA) in Christchurch and NZ.

How to Prepare for Class 2

Preparing for your Class 2 test doesn’t have to be an ordeal. Get a little focused practice and the right information, and you’ll be good as gold. Here’s how to get started:

Obtain Your Learner Licence for Class 2

When upgrading, you will also need to pass a learner theory test for Class 2. This is not the same as the Class 1 car test — it includes more material about heavy vehicles, brakes, loading, signs and more.

Study the Official Road Code

The NZ Road Code for Heavy Vehicles, is your friend. It is available online for free, or can be purchased in print. Focus on these key sections:

  • Signs and their meanings
  • Load security and overloading
  • Distance and stopping rules
  • Priority in various traffic situations
  • Logbooks and work-time rules

Don’t just skim — read all the sections and find out why the rules exist.

What Does the Class 2 Licence Test Questions Cover?

The following are some of the test questions:

  • 9 Signs: Regulatory, warning and informational signs.
  • Rules: Priority, right of way, lane priorities, and yielding to other vehicles
